From Military Warfare to Scientific Research w/ Kerry Mapes
Drone Technology and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Expert Kerry Mapes joins the podcast to talk about drones and their many use cases from Military Technology and warfare to Scientific Research. Nick and Kerry discuss the many applications of new drone technology uses including engineering, science, military warfare, photography, and mapping. Kerry started out her drone career on the scientific front as a researcher under Dr. Narcisa Pricope at the University of North Carolina Wilmington where she studied invasive species. Her expertise ranges from the use of LiDAR to build 3D Point clouds and topographic maps, to using thermal imagery from aerial drones to inspect equipment or identify operational flaws. New Drone Technology in Warfare and Elsewhere
They also discuss US Drones vs. Chinese Drones, including the Defense Innovation Units Blue UAS list which is comprised of a certified list of drone models that are approved for Federal Government use. Currently, the blue cleared list has 16 different approved UAS models.
The two discuss how drones are used in the Ukraine War. Small UAS or sUAS technology is used daily on both sides of the fight and open source video of drone use in warfare is now common place on social media.
Kerry discloses how get started in the drone business and the vast industry that exists across market segments. She recommends getting an FAA Part 107 drone pilot certification so you can fly for commercial purposes.
